KCYP

KCYP

What is the KCYP?

KCYP stands for the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program.

It is a program which has been developed to help young people who are at a crossroads in their lives and require an opportunity to help realise their full potential.

The KCYP is a 14 month commitment - the first 20 weeks consists of training activities and camps which develop physical fitness and prepare participants for the Challenge of a lifetime: walking the Kokoda Track in PNG.

This life changing experience is followed by a further 6 months community support where participants regularly volunteer their time to local not for profit organisations and events eg. Gold Coast Pet Expo, Police Citizens Youth Club and Salvation Army.

The KCYP is about providing the opportunity for young people to learn the skills and qualities that matter in life: including discipline, tolerance, self worth, team work, purpose and leadership.

The program uses the spirit of Kokoda to teach the younger generation the value of endurance, courage, sacrifice and mateship.

In 2010, the KCYP expanded to 52 particpants from Brisbane, Gold Coast and Tweed.  All of the Kokoda Kids will travel to Papua New Guinea in September to either walk the Kokoda Track or take part in Kokoda Village Experience.

Whats involved for particpants?

  • Turning up to Sunday training sessions for 20 weeks
  • Walking the Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge in July - 96 km fundraising event
  • Learning about Australia’s military campaigns in Kokoda and Papua New Guinea and promoting awareness of its significance
  • Travelling to Papua New Guinea in September to walk the Kokoda Track or participate in the Village Experience
  • Undertaking public speaking roles and media opportunities which promote and raise funds for the KCYP
  • Giving to the local community by volunteering your time to not-for-profit organisations or events
