Nestled in the heart of Springbrook National Park, the Twin Falls Circuit is one of the most rewarding walks in Queensland (it’s really one of our favourites)! This Grade 3 trail is a 4-kilometre loop that takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you pause to admire the incredible scenery, or take selfies... With cascading waterfalls, ancient trees, and vibrant rainforest, the Twin Falls Circuit provides an unforgettable escape into nature, just a short drive from the heart of the Gold Coast.

What Makes the Twin Falls Special?

The Twin Falls Circuit is a showcase of Springbrook’s stunning biodiversity and geology. From walking behind waterfalls to wandering through towering rock clefts and shaded palm groves, this trail offers plenty of visual highlights and unique experiences. It’s no wonder that the circuit is a favourite among locals and visitors alike.

Here’s what makes this track a standout:

  • The trail passes behind Twin Falls and Blackfellow Falls, letting you experience the power and beauty of these natural wonders up close. The cool spray of the waterfalls, especially after rain, is refreshing and invigorating.
  • The track meanders through lush rainforest filled with tree ferns and palms before transitioning to an open eucalypt forest with its own distinct charm.
  • Along the track, you’ll spot majestic brush box trees (Lophostemon confertus), some of which have been carbon-dated to 1,500 years old. These giants are living relics of the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage Area.

The Route and What to Expect

The circuit can be accessed from two starting points: the Tallanbana Picnic Area or Canyon Lookout. While the trail can be walked in either direction, we recommend going anti-clockwise to make the most of the signage and enjoy a gentler descent (less steps on the way back up)!

What to Expect

  • Breathtaking views
  • Otherworldly landscape
  • Majestic waterfalls
  • Rock pools and shaded areas to pause and rest

The trail’s steady climb back through the rainforest is shaded and cool, making the return journey comfortable even on warmer days.

Tips for a Smooth Hike

While the Twin Falls Circuit is considered moderate in difficulty, a little preparation goes a long way in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.

  1. Start early: This is one of Springbrook National Park’s most popular tracks, so arriving early ensures you avoid the crowds and secure a parking spot. Aim for a weekday visit if possible.
  2. Wear sturdy footwear: The trail can be slippery, especially after rain, so sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential (also, just be careful…).
  3. Pack light, pack smart: Bring water, sunscreen, and snacks. A small backpack is ideal to keep your hands free for climbing or balancing on uneven sections. There aren’t a lot of shops or cafés on Springbrook so it’s important to be prepared.
  4. Check the weather: Rain can really get the waterfalls going but it also makes the track muddy and more challenging. Always check park alerts before your visit.

Who Is the Twin Falls Circuit For?

The circuit is ideal for those with a moderate level of fitness. The walk involves some steep sections, stairs, and uneven terrain, but it isn’t a gruelling walk by any means. Families with older children, nature enthusiasts, and photographers will all find something to love about this trail. Dogs and camping are not permitted.

Best Times to Visit

The Twin Falls Circuit is spectacular year-round, but the experience can vary depending on the season:

  • After rain: The waterfalls are at their most powerful after a good downpour. If you’re lucky, you might have the trail almost to yourself on a rainy day, but be prepared for slippery sections.
  • Early morning: Visiting in the morning not only avoids crowds but also lets you enjoy the trail in cooler conditions. The morning light filtering through the trees adds to the magic.
  • Weekdays: Weekends and school holidays can be busy, so opt for a weekday adventure if you prefer a quieter walk.

The History Behind the Scenery

Springbrook National Park is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, recognised for its ancient ecosystems and geological significance. The Twin Falls Circuit allows visitors to step into this living history, surrounded by species and landscapes that have remained relatively unchanged for millennia.

Nearby Attractions

If you have more time to explore, consider visiting these nearby spots:

  • Canyon lookout: The perfect place to begin or end your walk, offering sweeping views of the Gold Coast Hinterland and beyond.
  • Best of all Lookout: A short drive away, this lookout provides stunning vistas of the Tweed Caldera, particularly on clear days.
  • Local cafes and shops: Support the local community by stopping for coffee or a snack at one of Springbrook’s quaint cafes.

Respecting Nature

As with any outdoor adventure, it’s essential to leave no trace. Take only photos, and leave only footprints. The rainforest and its inhabitants rely on visitors to act responsibly by staying on marked paths and refraining from feeding wildlife. By respecting the environment, you help ensure that future generations can enjoy the beauty of the Twin Falls Circuit.

Why Twin Falls Should Be on Your List

The Twin Falls Circuit in Springbrook National Park is a rainforest escape like no other and is a great trail for building your endurance. So, are you ready for a real challenge? With its steep climbs and varied terrain, the trail provides great preparation for some of the limit-pushing challenges of the Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge, where participants confront over 4,000 metres of elevation and unrelenting physical demands.
