In 2023, the average finish time of the Brisbane 18km event was 4 hours and 10 minutes with the fastest team crossing the finish line in a staggering 2 hours and 5 minutes. The final team completed their hike in 6 hours and 17 minutes.
The biggest mistake our 18km Kokoda Challenge competitors make is thinking that they don’t have to train because it’s the shortest distance we offer. You may have run a half marathon or been on long hikes before, but we assure you that this will be unlike anything you have ever experienced.
The Kokoda Challenge is renowned for course maps that include some of the harshest elevation in the region. The hills are beyond steep and feel never-ending. The whole purpose of this event though is to challenge yourself, just as the name suggests. We are strong believers that “what doesn’t challenge you, doesn’t change you” and to really feel a strong sense of accomplishment, you must be willing to prove to yourself what you are made of.
Not only that, you have to be willing to sometimes put the needs of your teammates before your own. That’s the true meaning of the Kokoda Spirit and that’s exactly what our soldiers did on the Kokoda Track back in 1942.
Whether you’re a school group or an open team, the 18km Brisbane Kokoda Challenge promises to challenge you both physically and mentally. While we have a large number of trail runners tackle this course because of the shorter distance, it predominantly attracts hikers.
No matter how you plan to get to the finish line, the most important things to remember is that you’re only as fast as your slowest team member, you’re walking in remembrance of WWII soldiers who made enormous sacrifices for our country, and that through this event you will be making a difference in the lives of local youth.
