In 1942, a defining moment in Australian history unfolded - the Kokoda Campaign, marking one of the most significant battles the nation has ever witnessed. Amidst the rugged and treacherous terrain, a brave contingent of 625 Australian soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice, laying down their lives in the heat of conflict.
Kokoda Legacy is a hiking and trail running event that will take place on Australian Defence Force land at Kokoda Barracks, Canungra. This hallowed terrain holds deep historical significance, serving as the very training grounds where countless Diggers where trained in jungle warfare before embarking on their brave journey to New Guinea during WWII. Public access to Kokoda Barracks is typically prohibited as it still serves as a base for army training to this day.
Under the blazing November sun, on the solemn occasion of Remembrance Day, you will embark on a daring expedition, scaling steep inclines and confronting harsh declines, all while wading through rivers that echo the very challenges our valiant Diggers once endured to safeguard Australian soil. This immersive experience will bestow upon you a profound understanding of the indomitable spirit and immense sacrifices made by those who served with unwavering dedication.
Beyond paying homage to our heroic WWII Veterans, your participation in this event will extend support to two remarkable local charities committed to keeping the Spirit of Kokoda alive.
The Kokoda Youth Foundation, through outdoor experiences and mentorship, empowers and guides young Australians, enabling them to reach their full potential. Likewise, Gold Coast Legacy stands as a pillar of strength, offering unwavering support to the families of those who selflessly gave their lives or faced physical and mental challenges while serving in the Australian forces.

Starting at Canungra Area Golf Club, this walk will lead you to a memorial situated in Kokoda Barracks, which typically is not open to the public.
